Hypnospace Outlaw
Mar 12, 2019 Hypnospace Outlaw is instantly relatable for anyone who spends time dinking around online – particularly if you happened to have been doing it a few decades ago. As one of Hypnospace’s new enforcers, your job is to simple: Solve a string of assigned cases by tracking down terms-of-service violations (and their violators). Hypnospace Outlaw is a '90s internet simulator in which you scour Hypnospace 's wide variety of weird and wonderful websites to hunt down wrongdoers, while also keeping an eye on your inbox, avoiding viruses and adware, and downloading a plethora of apps that may or may not be useful.
So, what is it?Well. It is hard to describe.' A 'Whalers on the Moon' interpretation of Geocities'?Or possibly '90s Internet nostalgia for people who weren't actually there'.You play a community rules enforcer on an alternate '90s not-Geocities, that exists and is visited in people's dreams instead of on the Internet. You are assigned cases, where each case relates to a specific type of rule violation. Nba 2k19 prelude length. To solve each case, you need to search for information, visit homepages, collect clues, find hidden pages, and finally uncover the items that you are supposed to report to HQ. PraiseBefore I go into why I can't recommend this game, first some praise:The amount of effort that went into this game is impressive. Cheesy infomercials.
A whole bunch of different personal web pages, each with their own text, content and often music (the music deserves special praise!), that even update as the game goes on. Some of the things they spoof are absolutely dead-on - edgy teen webcomics, 'click here to earn a prize' customer surveys, obscure fandoms ('cybercog'), awful 3D artists, etc.Did I mention the music?
From imitation MIDI to bad rap, there is an awe-inspiring amount of custom music in the game, some of it absolutely hilarious. So why can't I recommend it?First off, it falls victim to the same classic failure mode as satire games, where the simulated drudgery you're doing is actual drudgery. The gameplay. Just isn't fun. It feels more like work. And in many of the early cases, you have to repetitively report item upon item on a page - you've already solved the puzzle, but the game is making you do busywork just to pad the play time.Second, many (possibly even the majority) of the puzzles are simply badly clued. You'll be stuck looking over page after page of irrelevant information to find that one thing that is an obscure clue to where you should actually be looking.
Some of the puzzles can be accidentally sequence broken, leaving you completely lost.Even when you find the right clues, they might be badly described, so that even though you found the right information it doesn't actually help you proceed. After all of this, once you get to the end, it just. Underwhelming is putting it mildly. All of this is exacerbated by a deliberately janky UI that makes the game a pain to actually play.
Every search and page load takes several seconds to perform. Every icon needs to be double-clicked. There is no way to just switch between applications.
In the latter half of the game, you have intermittent graphics glitches Just Because.Sure, it's supposed to be retro. And sure, making loads faster if you wiggle your mouse is a nice nod at an obscure quirk in Windows 95, but this does not improve the game. Funny Once, Mike.It also suffers from some really poor technical implementation. At one point I was stuck because I had to type a question mark but couldn't, because despite this game having been released in 2019 they still hadn't figured out such a simple thing as 'keyboard layouts' (I still have no idea what abomination of a keyboard layout that game was using).
That was the point where I was officially Done with the game.So while this game has some neat new ideas, both in terms of puzzle ideas and retro appreciation, all in all it's more frustrating than anything. If you're looking for a game about finding information on a fictional internet, play 'Orwell' instead.
