Don't bother with unique classes and non-human unit taming until the post-game. Those are NOT worth it in a normal story playthrough.That's off the top of my head.

Relatively early on in the game, your character will have to make a really difficult choice that will impact the rest of the story - I think you'll know it when you see it. Opportunities to grind will be pretty scarce for a little while after the choice is made, and there's a difficulty spike as well, so it's worth spending some time leveling and gearing up your characters before you complete the mission the choice is featured in.I would say that Tactics Ogre is a little more forgiving than FFT overall thanks to the Chariot Tarot system that lets you rewind combat, so you should feel free to play how you'd like and try out any classes that interest you. As other people have said, archers and ninja can be quite powerful if you're struggling, but don't let that stop you from using other kinds of units, as many of them have really interesting mechanics that can totally change your style of play.
